Funeral Options Introduction
The only UK legal requirement is that the death must be certified and registered, and the body either buried or cremated.
You can organise a funeral by yourself, or with the help of a funeral director, but the funeral cannot take place until the death has been registered - refer to Registering a Death section of this website.
The deceased may have planned their own funeral in advance, you should remember to check the will for any instructions or special wishes. If there are no clear wishes, it is left to the executor or closest relative(s) to decide whether the body is to be cremated or buried.
If you need to arrange a funeral in accordance with a particular religion - seek advise from the relevant priest, minister or religious organisation.
