Cremation

Cremation is chosen by more than 70% of the British population.  Yet just a few decades ago, most would have chosen burial.  Today the rise has levelled out and many cemeteries have reached, or are approaching capacity.

Cost is a factor when deciding between cremation or burial; in urban areas where burial space is scarce - cremation can be significantly cheaper.  Other considerations include (a) being able to scatter the remains somewhere meaningful (b) no future costs in terms of maintaining gravestones (c) some people prefer the idea of their body being disposed of instantly.

Bodies can only be cremated where the cause of death is definitely known. The crematorium (or funeral director) normally requires (a) an application form signed by the executor or next of kin, and (b) two cremation certificates (one signed by the treating doctor and one signed by an independent doctor) OR a single cremation form signed by the coroner.

When the crematorium is satisfied that the cause of death is known and the necessary forms have been signed, the 'medical referee' will authorise the cremation.

You need to decide what you want done with the ashes - and should make this clear to the crematorium staff or funeral director.  Options include scattering them in a memorial garden or favourite place, burying them or keeping them.  Some crematoriums may allow you to purchase a memorial plaque.

In the case of babies and very young children, there may be no ashes after a cremation.
